Orange Elephant Students observe the Black History Month

Our students relived the experiences through the looking glass of history and data analysis

Our young students spent time reading and learning about the black history and its significance. Here are some of our elementary students writing about it!

Some of our Middle School Students collected the following data sets from the internet and created a data picture!

Lynching by State

Based on the overall analysis, Mississippi and Georgia have had the highest number of lynching between the years 1882 - 1930

Saving the world 1 IMAGE AT A TIME!

Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology (CCMB) is a research laboratory located on the Health Sciences Campus of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

This group has established an outstanding record of research accomplishments, making significant new discoveries in areas such as:

  • Molecular genetics of tooth development
  • Molecular etiology of cleft lip and palate and rescue
  • Nanotechnology strategies for growth of bones and teeth

The Orange Elephant Alumni have worked with the team of Doctors and Research fellows in developing an App that allows the Physicians and the Research Scientists to analyze 3-D Cranial images on their phones.

This empowers them to look at these images and make quick decisions about the conditions of their patients when on the move and saving critical time!

Critical Thinking Writing by our student:

Cancer’s Story: the infectionist

400 B.C.

“You're sure that the king’s guards can’t see us,” Cancer said.

“Yeesh, you worry too much. All we did was do our job, ” replied his friend Cell. “Let us get back home before they find us.”

“Man, these blood cells look really good,” Cell said. “Dude, you know you’re cooking tonight, right?”

Cancer said. “Yeah, I know. Wait! I forgot something!”

“What?”

“We need to give the blood cells in 5 minutes.”

“Cell, we are at least 10 miles away from Leukemia's house. How do you expect us to get there in 5 minutes?!?”

“Cancer, we have the Blood Vessel,” replied Cell. “Oh, yeah……”

Cancer and Cell were munching away at their meal when they got a knock on their door. Cancer finished his meal at the exact moment that they got the knock on the door. So, he went up to the door and opened it. Two of the king’s guards were at the door.

“Hi…..” Cancer said as he opened the door.

“Have you heard the news about the King’s death?” one of the guards said. Cancer replied, “Yes, yes, such a tragedy we have lost a very go-”.

The guard cut him off mid-word. “Well, we are looking for the culprits responsible for his death. Have you seen these two men?” The guard showed a close enough drawing of Cancer and Cell.

“No, I have not.”

“Very well then. Be sure to come to the banquet in the King’s honor in two days. It will be in the city square. Good Day!”

“Good Day!” Cancer said. Cancer closed the door.

“Cell, do you have any of those…Ejections?”

“You mean injections,” Cell replied with a mouthful of mango mousse.

“Yes, one of those. Do you have them?”

“Yes, but why do you need them?”

“There is another job Leukemia wants us to do. He said he would give us 100 lb of gold. But, this one is probably the hardest one that we have ever done.”

“Well, what is it?”

“In 7 days time, we have to get every single blood cell from the Palace Dragon” There was 5 minutes of complete silence.

“You’re kidding….Right?” Cell said half-chuckling and half-shocked. “When did Leukemia tell you?”

“He told me when his daughter was giving you the food.” Another moment of silence.

“Well, let us get started.”

7.5 days later

“This is a terrible disaster. The dragon was gift from my father to my mother. It was the only living memory of him. Now, it is long gone,” the prince said with hint of sadness in his voice.

“We will find the three men, my lord.”

The army’s commander and the elder prince were having a discussion in the yard of the palace. “You better find them by nightfall. If you do I will reward you with 2 tons of gold,” the prince replied.

The army commander fidgeted with excitement. “ I will be waiting for your return…..With the three men,” the prince said. “I presume that you know where these threecmen are.”

“Yes, my lord.” “What are there names again?” the prince asked the commander.

“Cancer, Cell, and Leukemia.”

“Ah, yes. Thank you for reminding me, Commander. Now, Good Day.” “Good Day.” The commander couldn’t wait to have the two tons of gold in his hands.

“The commander is waiting for you, my lord…With the three men in his captivity,” the palace messenger said to his prince.

“Tell him that I will be there in a minute with the palace wizard. You have given the commander his reward I presume?” the prince said to the messenger.

“Yes, my lord,” the messenger replied. “Good Day.”

“Good Day.” The messenger went off to go tell what the prince told him to say. Once the messenger left, the prince went to the far parts of the palace. He finally came a across a door that said “Wizard’s Room.” The prince opened the door.

“Dumbledore?”

“Yes, my lord,” replied a tall, thin man with a very long white beard and wearing a very tall pointed hat.

“Do you have everything ready?” the prince asked. “Yes, my lord,’ replied Dumbledore. “Then, let’s go,” the prince said.

“You three men have committed a very serious crime. The punishment for this will be something far worse than death.”

The prince, commander, Dumbledore were in a very large room with Cancer, Cell, and Leukemia, who were sitting in a very big glass tube.

“Dumbledore, you may begin,” the prince said.

“Yes, my lord,” replied Dumbledore. “I will explain to you three men what I am going do to you.”

The three men shivered with fear.

“Cancer and Leukemia, You will be turned into cell-killing viruses ”

Leukemia and Cancer burst into tears.

“Ah, and you my friend, Cell, you will be our testing blood cell.”

Cell burst into a series of screams and cries.

“I will start now.”

“Please don’t. No, No, No, No, NOOOOO-”

After a few minutes of silence, Dumbledore broke it by saying, “Now that’s done, let us have dinner, Shall we?”

Cancer has been around for millions of years. Yet, doctors have not found a cure for this indestructible disease. We hope that some day soon that humans will find a cure to Cancer.

Cancer project done using Scratch:

Note from Student:

I want to dedicate this project to all the doctors researching about cancer and trying to find a cure to this deadly virus. I also want to dedicate this to the kids and adults who have or had cancer. I also want to dedicate this to Cancer organizations who are raising money for cancer research.
